This is a beautiful breed that was originally bred as gun dogs. The term ‘retriever’ referred to their ability to retrieve the shot game undamaged. These dogs are easy to train and are well suited to suburban or country environments. Golden Retrievers require regular grooming as they tend to shed very frequently.
Large and strongly-built, these dogs have a dense, water-repellant wavy coat. They are usually blonde, yellow or gold in colour. They have mild feathering on the backs of their forelegs and the front of their necks, bottom of their tails and backs of their thighs is covered with heavy feathering.
This breed has a friendly and gentle temperament, thus it is not apt for being a professional guard dog. However, being intelligent, it is used as a guide dog, a hearing dog, a hunting dog, detection dog as well as a participant in search and rescue missions. Golden Retrievers are calm, friendly, kind as well as patient with children, thus making excellent family pets. They are driven by an eagerness to please their masters.
