Originally a sighthound, the Greyhound is very popular in Greyhound racing. However, the breed is now becoming quite popular as a family pet, thanks to its loving, intelligent, gentle and charming nature. It can live in apartments, as it is inactive indoors and does not bark too much. A brisk walk and regular runs in open spaces are enough to keep the breed happy and well-exercised. The breed is an average shedder and the short hair is easy and simple to groom.

Greyhound Temperament

Although the Greyhound has a reserved nature, it is a loving, brave breed. It requires calm yet masterful handling, without any harsh discipline. If the breed is socialised, it loses its innate timidity. At the same time, it has a strong prey drive and will chase anything moving quickly. So, the breed is not right for homes with other domestic pets, such as cats and rabbits. It also is not the best choice for homes with small kids.

Greyhound Description

Greyhound is a slender, tall breed. It has a narrow and long head that is shaped like a triangle – narrow and long at the muzzle and wide at the forehead region. It has small ears that tend to perk up half the way when the dog gets excited. The legs are long and the front legs are completely straight. The chest is wide; while the tail is long and tapering, with a small curve at the end.
