Playful, loyal and furry, the Alaskan Malamute was originally bred for pulling heavy freight like sledges, and is a bundle of stamina, strength and energy. Today, it makes for a loving, intelligent pet and requires lots of tasks, attention and exercise to keep it occupied. Because of its shaggy coat, it requires a fair amount of grooming.

Alaskan Malamute Temperament

Alaskan Malamutes are extremely loyal and intelligent. Great with older children and fond of the outdoors and exercise, the Alaskan Malamute makes a good family pet as long as it is trained well.  Without firm leadership, training and the required amount of exercise, these dogs can get out of hand quickly. The Alaskan Malamute will greet anyone it meets as a friend and is therefore not ideal as a guard dog.

Alaskan Malamute Description

The largest of the Arctic dogs, the Alaskan Malamute has a thick double coat of fur about three inches in length and a well built body with a plumed tail. It has a wide head with erect ears and eyes of normal size that are usually dark brown and obliquely placed. Frequently mistaken for a wolf, the Malamute has a sweet, expressive face that differs from the former.

They are a beautiful dog and make a great family pet – as long as you don’t mind a bit of shedding.
